Strength-Based/Non-Directive Support

The present exercise delves into the domain of strength-based and non-directive support methodologies, prompting participants to reflect on a specific instance when they either received such support or provided it to another individual. They are encouraged to scrutinise their thoughts, emotions, and insights garnered from that experience, as well as those derived from today’s session, and consider how these reflections will shape their role as a peer.

In the course of my collaboration with the PIER team, it is noteworthy that their approach consistently adhered to the principles of non-directive and strength-oriented support. I vividly recall instances in which I harbored doubts about my ability to accomplish specific tasks in the future. However, the adept members of the team deftly steered my perspective away from despondency and towards a mode of incremental progress. Their approach emphasized the significance of taking small, forward-moving steps and consistently celebrated the cumulative achievements I had already attained. This method was particularly instrumental in instilling a sense of hope and fortifying my self-assurance. Notably, it enabled me to tangibly gauge my advancements, owing to my unwavering commitment and persistence.

From the session held, I have assimilated a wealth of knowledge concerning the judicious application of reframing techniques. These techniques equip support workers with the capacity to reshape narratives characterised by negativity and lackluster motivation into narratives that pivot towards an individual’s strengths and radiate optimism. The transformative power of reframing becomes particularly manifest, as it empowers us to reconfigure the very concept of recovery. In doing so, it kindles the flames of aspiration within individuals, motivating them to pursue their goals with renewed vigour and determination. Additionally, the session has equipped me with insights into the utility of tools such as the Wheel of Life and the GROW model. These instruments are poised to become valuable additions to my arsenal as a peer support worker. They facilitate the process of helping peers assess their present circumstances and navigate the intricate path towards recovery.

In my capacity as a peer support worker, I am deeply committed to exercising utmost diligence in the selection of words and expressions. I am acutely aware of the pivotal role that language plays in the facilitation of recovery and the cultivation of self-assuredness in those I support. My unwavering dedication to this aspect of my role is rooted in the understanding that words possess the transformative power to invigorate and inspire individuals on their journey to recovery.
