Exploring Risk In Peer Support Relationships

In the realm of health economics, risk constitutes a pivotal element that significantly influences the decision-making process. The following exercise scrutinizes the notion of risk, particularly in the context of interpersonal relationships among peers.

“Reflect upon a personal experience when you ventured into activities that others might have deemed ‘risky.’ Investigate your thoughts, emotions, and the insights gleaned from this experience and the session today, and contemplate how it will shape your role as a peer.”

During my second year at university, I made the bold decision to participate in multiple university society committees. This choice carried inherent risks, primarily due to the considerable time commitment associated with these social activities. Regrettably, this commitment jeopardized the time I needed to allocate for my academic studies, particularly during the demanding second year of university. Consequently, I faced the grim outcome of failing an examination, primarily due to my lack of preparation for the December exam. Consequently, I was compelled to retake the exam later during the summer.

This experience served as a poignant lesson, highlighting the imperative need for me to be discerning and selective in how I allocate my time, contingent upon the desired outcomes and my personal well-being. I have come to recognize that, when circumstances become overwhelming, I should invoke my wellness plan, a valuable tool that aids in restoring my overall well-being.

As a peer supporter, this experience has imparted a crucial insight into the significance of effective communication with peers regarding their own wellness plans. Employing a ‘Let’s Be’ agreement serves as a powerful means of establishing clear accountability, whether through written or verbal agreements, which revolves around ensuring their safety and well-being. These are practical tools and strategies that I have integrated into my daily life. While I may not always necessitate a formalised ‘Let’s Be’ agreement, I seek to engage in constructive negotiations with others to foster a safe and trust-based relationship.
