Embarking on my inaugural internship experience beyond the academic confines of university, I undertook the task of documenting my insights and reflecting upon my journey in the role of a Digital Marketing Assistant. This internship took place during the summer of my first year at university and was secured through a university-related opportunity. In this reflection, I will outline my duties within the role and provide an overview of my reflections and key takeaways.
Duties:
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO): A primary responsibility of my role involved engaging with search engine optimization techniques to enhance the company’s online visibility and reach.
- Strategic Analysis: I was tasked with identifying strategies for optimizing the company’s online presence, encompassing a comprehensive analysis of competitor websites.
- Website Design: I participated in the design and development of the company’s new website, contributing to its visual and functional aspects.
- Additional Responsibilities: As required, I undertook various supplementary duties relevant to the placement.
- Time Tracking: I diligently maintained a weekly timesheet to monitor and record my work hours.
- Reflective Reporting: Upon the conclusion of the placement, I was obligated to submit a reflective piece detailing my experiences and insights gained.
Over the course of this placement, I had the opportunity to acquire a multitude of technical skills, particularly in the realm of digital marketing. My contributions encompassed developing the company’s website, employing techniques such as link-building, on-page SEO optimization, and harnessing the power of search engines and social media. I had access to a comprehensive suite of tools provided by the company, including Google Analytics, BuzzSumo, Yoast SEO, Crazy Egg, and Ahrefs, which facilitated my technical growth in this domain.
Complementing my technical skill development, I also honed various interpersonal skills during this remote working experience. Notably, the concepts of time management and self-discipline emerged as indispensable attributes for success in a virtual work environment. The remote working format required meticulous time management, an area in which I witnessed considerable personal growth. The company’s outcome-driven and efficient approach to work aligned seamlessly with my working style, enabling us to capitalize on SEO tool trials even during weekends. Additionally, I was appreciative of the company’s flexibility in accommodating my time off to celebrate Eid, while also ensuring that I could compensate for any missed work without compromising our overall goals.
Collaboration was a key facet of this placement, as I had the privilege of working closely with each member of the team. These interactions extended beyond individual contributions and into team-wide initiatives, including the development of the company’s website, creation of workshop booklets, and extensive keyword research. The collaborative atmosphere fostered the exchange of ideas and the constant refinement of our work. Constructive feedback from my colleagues broadened my perspective and instigated the adoption of fresh ideas. Consequently, we iteratively adjusted and refined our projects until we collectively produced work of which we were all proud.
Looking ahead, I envision a future where I actively contribute to the long-term growth of the company. My aspiration is to explore novel strategies for expanding the company’s outreach and furthering its objectives. I am confident in my ability to achieve this by continuously enhancing my skill set in digital marketing and related areas, primarily through my academic pursuits at the University of Leicester Business School.
